1 Paco Alcacer in action for Valencia Liverpool have been warned off Valencia striker Paco Alcacer after the Spanish side slapped a whopping £70m price tag on him.The striker played just the final six minutes of the 3-1 La Liga match against Sevilla on Sunday, as a late substitute, after losing his place in the starting XI.The two-footed 21-year-old has started 15 league matches in Spain this season but has been subbed off in six of those.Alcacrer’s stock is still sky-high across Europe, however, which is why Valencia are set to tie him to a new deal running until 2020 with the gargantuan buy-out fee.The Reds have been linked with a move for the forward in the January transfer window. But the club’s sporting director Francisco Rufete said: “We still have to nail down a few small things after months of negotiations, but everything seems to indicate that Paco Alcacer will soon become a Valencia player for the next five years, until 2020.”

It’s been a long summer without new episodes of The Flash, but it’s back and so is Barry Allen. I would have liked to see what a Wally West-focused Flash would be like, but that wasn’t the point of this episode. Instead, we got to see exactly what Team Vibe/Team Kid Flash had to do in Barry’s absence. It’s not pretty. It took Iris in the lab, Vibe and Kid Flash working in perfect coordination, plus Joe with a well-timed taser to take down Peek-A-Boo. The chase that begins the show is a whole lot of fun, and makes me so happy that the CW superheroes are back. Still, Peek-A-Boo isn’t exactly Central City’s toughest villain. The fact that it took all that to capture her without Barry doesn’t inspire confidence. Nor does the fact that most of the rogues they have managed to catch have escaped. This episode was all about digging The Flash out of the hole season three left. It would have been nice to spend the season premiere on something a little more exciting, but the sooner the show cleans up its mess, the better. The cool thing was we got to see Iris take more of a commanding role. In Barry’s absence, she’s spent all her time pushing forward to distract her from the fact that he was gone. She’s a competent leader of the team, and I hope she stays that way. It’s fun watching her figure out how to catch villains. Especially after last season had her waiting around to be saved or killed.By the end of the episode, this season already has a different feel to the last one. The optimistic, lighter tone is back, but the show had to go through some places to get there. Thankfully, those were handled well too. The emotional moments early on make you feel for Iris and the difficult position she’s in. She’s forced herself to believe that Barry’s never coming back, but the way he left prevents her from really moving on.Jesse L. Martin as Detective Joe West (Photo: Katie Yu/The CW)But Barry has to come back. A powerful Samurai appears, threatening to destroy the city unless the real Flash faces him. He’s too strong for Vibe and Cisco to defeat. In Barry’s absence, Cisco even has trouble coming up with good villain names. (Although, “Samurai Jackass” is much better than “Samuroid.”) They need Barry back and Cisco has been working on a plan ever since he left. To accomplish it, they need one more missing member of the team. Cisco finds the surprisingly un-Killer Frost Caitlin working at a bar, and convinces her to come back. The team is back together! It’s when they manage to pull Barry out of the Speedforce (replacing him with a genetic placeholder), that things get interesting. For Barry, it’s been much longer than six months. He comes out of the Speedforce changed. He impulsively scribbles a strange alphabet on the walls that Cisco can only translate as “This house is bitchin’.” He also keeps repeating lines from his past. Except for one. Remember, time flows differently in the Speedforce. It’s entirely possible he saw events from his past and future played out over and over again. “Your Honor, I’m innocent. I didn’t do this! I didn’t kill anyone!” he says. Could season four see an adaptation of “Trial of the Flash?” Also, Barry looks kinda good with a beard. I was almost a little sad when Joe shaved it.Jesse L. Martin as Detective Joe West, Candice Patton as Iris West and Grant Gustin as Barry Allen (Photo: Katie Yu/The CW)In the end, it’s Iris who brings Barry out of his funk. After a conversation about faith with her dad, she realizes she needs to believe Barry will come back to save her. She allows herself to be captured by the Samurai. Hearing that Iris is in danger is enough to snap Barry out of it and save her. The fight, as fights often do on this show, comes late in the episode, so it’s very short. (That’s how they save money on action scenes.) It’s still really cool. There’s just something satisfying about watching someone get hit by a propeller. It’s the best scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark, it’s the best scene in Titanic, and it’s the best part of this episode. Saving Iris did more than bring Barry back to the way he was, though. It seems to have given him closure. All the trauma and darkness he was dealing with last season is gone. Yes, it comes way too easy, but I’ll take anything that gets this show out of last season’s dark and brooding phase. Even if it’s a huge plot convenience. It may not be great writing, but it gets the job done. Getting The Flash back on track this early is smart. It lets us know that the show will get back to what made us love it in the first place. It may have been a clunky solution, but it got us there. I’m now so much more excited about season four than I was when season three ended. They also set up some great potential storylines for the season to come. Barry’s back and not angsty anymore, but the show still needs to address what he went through in the Speedforce. Whether he really is all better or not is sure to provide an interesting point of tension in episodes to come. Same with Caitlin. As we saw in her final scene, Killer Frost isn’t gone. She now comes out when someone makes Caitlin angry enough. Yeah, she’s basically Ice-Hulk now. She even says, “Don’t make me frosty. You wouldn’t like me when I’m frosty.” Hey, at least they know. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how all that plays out. Especially since she had to leave some pretty scary-looking people to rejoin Team Flash.(Via The CW)Let’s talk about that ending, before we go. We have now met our big bad for the season, and thank all that’s good and holy in the world; it’s not another speedster. I can’t believe it took us until season four to get here, but we’re here. That’s all that matters. In the end, it turns out the Samurai was actually a robot created for the express purpose of drawing The Flash out. (Thinking about it, that’s a perfect metaphor for this entire episode.) The robot was created by The Thinker. The Thinker sits in a futuristic chair in an unknown location. His cap, which he invented gives him incredible mental powers. In the comics, The Thinker was the name of a few villains who fought multiple DC superheroes over the years. Judging by his appearance alone, because we haven’t seen much else, this version looks to be a combination of all of them. He has the cap of his first incarnation, but the futuristic look of the hologram version that fought Wally West in some more recent comics. He’s probably not a hologram or a computer simulation, but we’ll have to wait until we find out where exactly that lair is. In the comics, the thinking cap gives him powers of telekinesis and mind control, neither of which is a stretch for this series. Most exciting about this choice is that he’s not someone Barry can just outrun. He’s a much more mental threat. To even fight him directly, Barry will have to find him first, and that alone will be a formidable challenge. It’s so much more interesting at this point to have a villain Barry has to out-think. Barry’s criminology skills should be put to the test this season, and I can’t wait to see what kinds of stories a new kind of villain brings out of this show.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
