Liverpool star Wijnaldum: Competition key to midfield successby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveGeorginio Wijnaldum insists Liverpool’s packed midfield is helping them improve as players.Jurgen Klopp has Wijnaldum, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Fabinho to pick from in central midfield. And Wijnaldum believes the competition encourages them players to raise their game.”It’s always good if you have competition in one position because that means you have to perform to stay in the team,” the midfielder, who has very often stayed in Jürgen Klopp’s team this season, tells liverpoolfc.com.”But I think that has to be normal at a club like Liverpool because it’s a top team, one of the biggest teams in England, so Liverpool will always sign good players and that means there will always be competition in the team.”That makes players even better – not only because you have an ‘opponent’ in your position, but also because you play and train against good teammates, so it makes you automatically a better player.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say

Tottenham to compete with Man Utd for Leicester midfielder James Maddisonby Paul Vegas21 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveTottenham will compete with Manchester United for the signature of Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.Christan Eriksen looks set to leave Tottenham after refusing to sign a new contract, having made it clear during the summer that he wanted to find a new club, says the Daily Star. The Danish midfielder is in the final year of his contract and so can leave for nothing next summer – meaning Spurs will likely look to cash in on him in the January transfer window. And Leicester City ace Maddison , who has just been called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad, has been identified as the perfect replacement. But Tottenham will face competition for the 22-year-old, who does not have a buy-out clause in his contract, with United believed to be confident of completing a £60m deal to take him to Old Trafford. Bracketology is in full swing, with teams starting to secure their tournament position and seed ranges. This week, a mock NCAA Tournament selection committee gathered in Chicago. Aaron Ramsey will leave Arsenal this summer after 11 years with the club. The Welshman had a contract offer withdrawn by the Gunners earlier in the season but head coach Unai Emery will keep the Welshman until his contract expires at the end of the campaign. As revealed by Goal on Friday, Italian giants Juventus are close to signing the 28-year-old, who has made 352 appearances and scored 60 goals for the north London side since joining from Cardiff City in 2008. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ramsey’s time at Emirates Stadium has been fraught with highs and lows, but his ability to deliver in big games means he will always have a place in Arsenal history. Two FA Cup-winning goals, against Hull and Chelsea respectively, helped end a barren spell for the Gunners and it is those happy memories which many supporters are holding onto as his contract runs down over the next few months. But why are Arsenal prepared to lose Ramsey for free this summer instead of receiving a transfer fee for him this month? The answer lies in the club’s surprising dearth of options in the final third. While they do boast the likes of Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and summer signing Lucas Torreira in midfield, there is no single player like Ramsey in the squad. His box-to-box qualities, and ability to create chances and stretch play, make him a unique proposition for opposition defences – and it’s been no surprise to see him repeatedly making a big impact coming off the bench in recent games.Ramsey has three assists in 524 minutes this season, behind only Hector Bellerin (four) and level with Mesut Ozil. He’s also created 12 scoring opportunities so far, the second highest in the team, after Ozil. It’s evident that his contributions are worthy of a new contract extension, but Arsenal’s decision to withdraw their offer for a mixture of football and financial reasons is a sign of the change of priorities under the new hierarchy led Raul Sanllehi and Vinai Venkatesham. Both have previously explained that Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke will support a self-sustaining business model, while it is unknown how far the club’s transfer budget can be stretched in January and beyond anyway. The need for a new defender is clear and new additions will almost certainly be looked at by Emery, a coach who is still getting to grips with his squad, working out his best system and shifting players out who he believes don’t fit with his footballing philosophy – such as Ramsey.Arsenal have one of the highest wage bills in the Premier League and Goal understands that there is a clear aim to reduce it during the coming seasons, while at the same time securing a return to the Champions League next season – a requirement which is imperative if Arsenal are able to challenge on any front financially.Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Lucas Perez all left the Emirates last summer but the signings of Bernd Leno, Sokratis, Matteo Guendouzi, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Torreira have all added to the club’s wage bill. When contract extensions for the likes of Granit Xhaka, Alex Iwobi, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Calum Chambers are factored into the equation, the need to cut costs is clear.Arsenal are, thus, looking at bringing in a fresh, young group of hungry players rather than meeting the demands of senior players requesting £200,000-a-week, as was the case with Ramsey.Teenage talents such as Emile Smith Rowe and Joe Willock are both highly rated by Emery and his coaching staff, which only further justifies the decision to withdraw a contract offer for Ramsey and put faith in players who could realistically be ready for regular first-team football within the next couple of seasons.Ramsey will almost certainly be a success at Juventus. He has the technical ability, professionalism and work ethic to succeed in Italy, and is now entering the peak years of his career. However, as far as Arsenal are concerned, his summer departure makes as much sense for them as it does for the player.
Twitter/@KennyDuceyAuburn beat LSU with one of the most bizarre final sequences you’ll see.On fourth down with time running down, LSU’s Danny Etling completed a pass a few yards short of the goal line. With just one second left on the clock and no timeouts, there did not appear to be enough time for LSU to run another play. However, the Tigers were confusingly saved by their own penalty—an illegal motion—which gave them a repeat of fourth down with that final second remaining. With that play, Etling found D.J. Chark in the corner of the end zone for what appeared to be the game winning score.Definitely didn’t get it off, and definitely threw it past the line of scrimmage pic.twitter.com/c1i1hFGBCh— Kenny Ducey (@KennyDucey) September 25, 2016Of course, aside from the confusion over whether or not LSU should’ve had the extra chance at all, it did not appear that Etling got the play off in time. He also looked to be past the line of scrimmge when he threw the pass. Officials reviewed the play, and correctly decided that the game clock had expired before the snap, reversing the touchdown and giving Auburn the big win.In a game that means a ton to two high-profile SEC West coaches on the hot seat, Auburn beat LSU, giving Gus Malzahn a bit of life. Whether it is enough to save his season is yet to be seen, but Les Miles’ seat certainly doesn’t get any cooler with this loss.

(Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)When Derion Kendrick arrived at Clemson, he was listed as an ‘athlete’ but the recruiting services. And he was an elite one at that. The former five-star player was ranked No. 26 overall in the class. He began his career at wide receiver, after excelling there in high school, but has switched sides.Kendrick is now at cornerback for the Tigers, and just a few weeks into the move he may very well lock up a starting job. Right now, the coaching staff says he’d be penciled in there.Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables said as much when asked about Derion Kendrick recently. From The Charlotte Observer:“If you said name the starters today, you’re picking two, he’s one of those two starters today,” Venables said. “When that decision was made, really he’s just taken off. Very natural, got great instincts, very tough, competitive, incredible transitional movement… He’s still learning a lot of the nuances and intricacies of what we do. But it comes very easy to him.”Cornerback A.J. Terrell returns as one of the team’s starters from last year’s national championship-winning Tigers club.Kendrick is vying for the other job, along with Kyler McMichael, Mario Goodrich and LeAnthony Williams. As of today, he has the upper hand. While many guys might prefer playing offense, Kendrick doesn’t seem to mind the switch, even after a solid 15 catch, 210 yard season as a freshman:“I’m going to go hard at whatever I do… I don’t really have a preference. As long as I’m on the field it doesn’t really matter,” Kendrick said. “The biggest thing to learn is just the basics of the whole defense, that’s it. I really knew everything about corner and stuff from high school, so it really comes natural.”If he continues to develop there, Clemson is going to be even more dangerous than we may have already assumed. Surprise, surprise.[The Charlotte Observer]

The clash, which has already attained the status of ‘El Clasico’ of the IPL, more often than not throws up a number of interesting battles between the superstars present on both sides.Earlier in the 2019 IPL, Mumbai Indians snapped Chennai Super Kings’ 3-match winning streak. Here’s a look at the key battles to look out for as CSK host MI in Round 2 of what could be an exciting clash:1. Chahar vs ChaharDouble first cousins Deepak and Rahul Chahar have come a long way from playing cricket together in the bylanes of Agra to the most prestigious T20 tournament in the world right now. But tonight in Chennai one should rest assured that as any sibling rivalry goes, Deepak and Rahul will be trying to outdo each other by any means possible to help their teams’ case. While Deepak has been a revelation in IPL 2019 with 14 wickets at an excellent economy rate of 6.95 his younger cousin is not far behind with 9 wickets from just 7 matches at a miserly economy of 6.61. Both are currently the second-highest wicket-takers for their respective teams and would want to reclaim the top spot tonight. Sadly, only one would end up on the winning side.2. Slinga vs Run MachineLasith Malinga might not be the enforcer he was in his heyday but the Sri Lankan toe-crusher is already an IPL legend. He has taken the most wickets in the history of the Indian Premier League (162). This season he has picked up 8 wickets in 6 matches at a strike-rate of 16.62 but he has been expensive as the economy rate of 9.02 suggests.advertisementMalinga will be up against one of CSK’s batting mainstays over the years in Suresh Raina, who has been in a tussle with Virat Kohli for the leading run-scorer in the IPL. Raina has been a prolific run-scorer for CSK over the years with a total of 5230 runs at a healthy strike-rate of 137.59. However, like Malinga, Raina too has found the going a bit tough this year with 245 runs in 11 matches at an average of 24.50 and a strike-rate of 121.89.Both these stalwarts would be looking for redemption no matter the larger battles at stake and whoever comes out trumps could not just decide the fate of the match but also their team’s fortune in the IPL 2019.3. Who will be the ‘Champion’ of all-rounders?At more than 35 years of age, Dwayne Bravo is in the twilight of his cricket career. But the ‘Champion’ all-rounder takes a lot of pride in wearing the Yellow jersey as has been evident by his 9 wickets from 6 matches at an excellent strike-rate of 13.44.He will be up against Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who despite having a difficult time in the recent past, has shown glimpses of his raw talent in IPL 2019. Pandya is the third-highest scorer for his team this season with 241 runs at an average of 40.16 and an excellent strike-rate of 189.76. Adding the 8 wickets he has taken for MI to this tally, it looks like Pandya is finally owning up the role everyone has been expecting him to since his debut.Though Pandya edges ahead of Bravo in batting terms, the West Indian has the knack of surprising many at regular intervals – just like he does with his slower balls.Note: MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja’s absence will be a big blow for CSK on Friday as they look to seal their spot in the playoffsAlso Read | The MS Dhoni connection with the Parags: From Ranji Trophy 1999 to IPL 2019Also Read | Rohit Sharma says CSK vs MI is El Clasico of IPL.
