Mumbai marathon: The other Dhoni inspired by the original

first_imgBahadur Singh Dhoni, in his first marathon, won the bronze medal in MumbaiEven as Mahendra Singh Dhoni walked into bat at MCG, another Dhoni many thousand miles away had secured a podium finish for himself in the Mumbai marathon.Bahadur Singh Dhoni comes from Kumaon, the same region in Uttarakhand where India’s superstar cricket captain originally hails from. He currently works in the Hyderabad army and represents the Two Naga Kumaon regiment. It was his first marathon of 42 kms and a bronze medal finish is not a bad start. But having been a seasoned campaigner, running smaller races, he understands what made the difference between a bronze and a gold. “I tried to follow the leaders but because of lack of experience, lost my way,” he says.Having made the most of opportunities to train with Olympian marathoner Ram Singh Yadav, he remains his running idol. But for a man named Dhoni who also comes from the same neck of the woods, there is also a larger inspiration somewhere. “I remember when I started running 10 years ago, he was new in international cricket. He has come a long way. I feel inspired by him,” he says. But he has never met Dhoni and hopes to see him some day. With Bahadur’s army connect if not for his sporting credentials alone, that meeting should not be too far away.last_img read more
