(Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)When Derion Kendrick arrived at Clemson, he was listed as an ‘athlete’ but the recruiting services. And he was an elite one at that. The former five-star player was ranked No. 26 overall in the class. He began his career at wide receiver, after excelling there in high school, but has switched sides.Kendrick is now at cornerback for the Tigers, and just a few weeks into the move he may very well lock up a starting job. Right now, the coaching staff says he’d be penciled in there.Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables said as much when asked about Derion Kendrick recently. From The Charlotte Observer:“If you said name the starters today, you’re picking two, he’s one of those two starters today,” Venables said. “When that decision was made, really he’s just taken off. Very natural, got great instincts, very tough, competitive, incredible transitional movement… He’s still learning a lot of the nuances and intricacies of what we do. But it comes very easy to him.”Cornerback A.J. Terrell returns as one of the team’s starters from last year’s national championship-winning Tigers club.Kendrick is vying for the other job, along with Kyler McMichael, Mario Goodrich and LeAnthony Williams. As of today, he has the upper hand. While many guys might prefer playing offense, Kendrick doesn’t seem to mind the switch, even after a solid 15 catch, 210 yard season as a freshman:“I’m going to go hard at whatever I do… I don’t really have a preference. As long as I’m on the field it doesn’t really matter,” Kendrick said. “The biggest thing to learn is just the basics of the whole defense, that’s it. I really knew everything about corner and stuff from high school, so it really comes natural.”If he continues to develop there, Clemson is going to be even more dangerous than we may have already assumed. Surprise, surprise.[The Charlotte Observer]last_img read more

MONTREAL — Laurentian Bank announced job cuts as it reported first-quarter net income of $40.3 million, down 32 per cent from the same period a year earlier. The Montreal-based lender’s net income for the quarter ended Jan. 31 amounted to 88 cents in diluted earnings per share, down from $1.41 one year ago.On an adjusted basis, Laurentian reported net income of $44.7 million or diluted earnings per share of 98 cents, down from $63.2 million or $1.49 per share a year ago.Analysts on average expected adjusted diluted earnings of $1.29 per share.Laurentian chief executive Francois Desjardins says the lender’s performance during the quarter was hurt by lower capital market revenue. Market volatility at the end of 2018 has weighed on the quarterly earnings of several Canadian banks. The bank also says it took measures to improve efficiency during the quarter that will lead to a reduction of its head count by approximately 10 per cent or 350 employees over the next 12 months.“Laurentian Bank Financial Group has never been in a better financial position, in terms of its solid capital and liquidity levels; it continues to have an industry low loan loss provision — a testament to the quality of our underwriting and credit risk management,” Desjardins said in a statement. “And even if there is more work to do, it has never been stronger in terms of its processes and technology.”The Canadian Press read more
