Karim Benzema ‘will not participate in Euro 2016’, French FA announce

first_img Karim Benzema playing for Real Madrid Karim Benzema is not set to take part in France’s bid to win the European Championship when they host the competition this summer, with the French FA confirming the Real Madrid star will not be called up.The 28-year-old has not played for his country since being questioned by police in November in connection to an alleged blackmail attempt against France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena, over a sextape reportedly showing Valbuena and his partner.And now it has been confirmed that Benzema, who, with 27 goals in 81 games, is his country’s eight leading scorer, will not be called up by Didier Deschamps this summer.The forward posted a video on Facebook to plead for his recall to the national fold, but the French football federation (FFF) have made it clear that the Madrid star will miss out.A statement published by the FFF said: “Didier Deschamps and (president) Noel Le Graet met to discuss the situation of Mr Benzema.“The president of the federation and the coach would agree that athletic performance is an important but not exclusive criteria for selecting the France national team.“The ability of players work towards unity, in and around the group, are also taken into account.“As a result, Noel Le Graet and Didier Deschamps decided that Karim Benzema will not participate in Euro 2016.”There are no indications as to whether Benzema will be called back up to the France squad following the tournament this summer, but it looks as if his career with Les Bleus will end having earned 81 caps. 1last_img read more
