Kythera Summer Edition celebrates 25th anniversary

first_imgKythera Summer Edition, an annual publication for visitors to ‘Aphrodite’s Island’, celebrates 25 years of publication.Founded in 1993 by Greek Australian Metaxia Poulos after her relocation to Greece, Kythera Summer Edition has been a staple and a point of reference for visitors to the island. The silver jubilee issue features a beautifully drawn map by artist Daphne Petrochilos on the cover, depicting Aphrodite dressed in a spalleto (local Kytherian traditional dress) holding the scales. This artwork also serves as an opportunity to reaffirm its mission statement, using the symbol of the scales as metaphor for balance. The ‘Kythera Summer Edition’ 2018.“The beauty of balance is modelled in nature,” reads the editorial statement of the newspaper; “the balance of past and future is modelled in reinventing traditional practices into modern businesses. […] We learn of the need to balance responsibility for the land between ourselves, government and non-government bodies. We read of the balance of birds, and indeed people, living between two countries, and restfully, the balance of the silence and rhythms of Kythera. For 25 years our paper has been a source of information, which goes towards combating ignorance, one of the greatest threats to justice and equality. It has been said that the opposite of poverty is not wealth, but justice. For Kythera, and our paper, the opposite of injustice is, the call for the protection of livelihoods, land – and lives.”To view ‘Kythera Summer Edition 2018’, go to kythira.info/en/kythera-summer-edition/ Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagramlast_img read more
