Four-time women’s soccer gold medal winners, the Papua New Guinea Lagatois got their campaign off on the right footing when they scored a convincing 5-2 victory over Melanesian cousins Solomon Islands at the Sepp Blatter Park yesterday afternoon in Apia, Samoa for the 16th Pacific Games. Despite being down 1-0 from the offset, PNG continued to pepper the latter’s goal-mouth and finally they made the breakthrough when skipper Lucy Maino snapped up a header from a corner kick in the slippery wet conditions. This was soon followed by right flank Ramona Padio scoring the next two goals to destroy any hope the latter had of an upset. In the second half, PNG blasted a further two goals from a Meagan Gunemba penalty and maino with another spectacular header. Solomon Islands scored one more but PNG was already in cruise control to win comfortably. PNG coach Frederica Sakette said it was a good win but would not dwell on it. PNG plays next on Wednesday.
