John Popper Tried To Steal Phish’s 1997 MSG New Year’s Booking Using Strippers

first_imgToday, Blues Traveler frontman John Popper turns 53 years old. In honor of the harmonica master’s birthday, we’re taking a look back at one of our favorite Popper stories from his decades-long career, as told in his 2016 autobiography Suck and Blow: And Other Stories I’m Not Supposed To Tell, written with Dean Budnick. The book touches on a number of amusing anecdotes, including a near-threesome with porn star Ron Jeremy and the time he congratulated Trey Anastasio on the birth of his first child with a literal truckload of diapers. The histories of Blues Traveler and Vermont jam titans Phish are certainly intertwined. The two bands and their various members have worked together on numerous occasions, most notably during the inaugural H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) tour in 1992, which many people now view as the catalyst for the modern jam band scene. Their connections would extend beyond H.O.R.D.E. as well, with Popper joining Phish onstage a number of times in the early- to mid-90’s.While Popper and Blues Traveler admired Phish (Popper refers to Anastasio as “our Mozart”), the fact remained that the two bands were, in many ways, in competition for bookings. That friendly competition gave way to one of our favorite Popper/Phish stories. In 1997, Phish had a hold on Madison Square Garden for New Year’s Eve, but Popper wanted Blues Traveler to have the spot.As Popper writes,[Phish] had what’s known as a ‘first hold,’ and we had decided to challenge them for it… We put up half the money — it was over a half-million bucks — and they had 48 hours to respond, when they had to put all their money down.”Popper also timed the challenge to coincide with Phish’s trip to Europe, and the band and a majority of their representatives were in Scotland for the 48-hour window. The band’s accountant, however, was in town holding down the fort. Naturally, to distract him, Popper “sent a stripper every 15 minutes for eight hours to his office to read from Sammy Davis Jr.’s ‘Yes I Can’.”Through some frantic work, Phish’s accountant was able to muster up the $600,000 to reserve the gig with only two hours to spare. According to Popper, he never told the band who kept sending their accountant all the strippers, so they found out the news along with the rest of the memoir’s readers in 2016.You can grab a copy of Suck and Blow: And Other Stories I’m Not Supposed To Tell today to hear more fantastic stories from John Popper’s career. Fowler White Burnett holds forum discussing economic development in the C’bean

first_imgRichard P. Morris, Esq., Fowler White Burnett; The Honorable Rafael Erwin Contreras, Minister of Trade and Investment, Belize; John H. Friedhoff, Esq., Fowler White Burnett; Ambassador Bayney Karran, Dean, CARICOM, Diplomatic Corps & Guyana’s Ambassador to the United States; and Dr. Barton Clarke, Executive Director of the Caribbean Agricultural Development and Research Institute Fowler White Burnett recently held an International Forum on the Impact of Agribusiness, Environmental and Economic Development in the CARICOM Region.  Spearheaded by Shareholder John H. Friedhoff, the Forum addressed agriculture and agribusiness and the opportunities for expanding trade between the Caribbean and Florida. In addition to discussing agricultural development, environmental needs and economic impact, the Forum addressed the need to move to agroprocessing and agriculture- based manufacturing and discussed the idea of faculty interaction between the University of the West Indies, the University of Guyana, the Guyana School of Agriculture and Zamorano University; furthermore, to increase interaction between the CARICOM nations and the private agriculture sector in the United States with a focus on bilateral and multilateral funding to promote investment and agroprocessing in the territory.Friedhoff, a Florida Bar Board Certified Specialist in International Law and Trustee of the Zamorano University in Honduras (where he serves on a pro-bono basis) brought to light the four undergraduate degrees the Zamorano University offers in Agricultural Engineering: Agronomy; Agribusiness Management; Food Agroindustry; and Environment and Development.Friedhoff noted the school is in reality a paradigm of Pan Americanism with students enrolling from the Caribbean, Central American and South America and that its actual name (Panamerican Agricultural School) is true to its name. He expressed hope that graduates and faculty from Zamorano would work together to assist in agribusiness development in the region and pledged his own assistance in jump starting such an initiative with his personal efforts. The four-year educational program emphasizes academic excellence and character formation, and it complements theory with practical field experience through its Learning by Doing program, in which the students work half a day in the production and processing plants or conserving the natural resources that are part of the university campus.last_img read more

Liberia’s President Weah makes his first appointments

first_imgBarely 24 hours after taking oath of office as new leader of Liberia, President George Weah hit the ground running by making his first appointments, the Premium Times reports. In his first batch of appointees, he named seven individuals including former Senate Pro-Tempore Gbezohngar Findley, who has been named Minister of Foreign Affairs.Findley is said to be a close ally of former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf who was a staunch supporter of former Vice President Joseph Boakai of Unity Party (UP) at the initial stage of the campaign period. Findley reportedly dumped Bokai, fueling speculations that Mrs. Johnson-Sirleaf had thrown her support behind President Weah.Daniel Ziankahn, a major general, was immediately retired as the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) and appointed the Minister of National Defence, replacing Brownie Samukai at the defence ministry. His appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.Prince Johnson, a brigadier general, takes over from Mr. Ziankahn as the new Chief of Staff of the AFL.Chairman of the now ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Nathaniel McGill has now been named the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs.Samuel Tweh, a long-time member of the CDC, who until his appointment was an economic consultant at the Millennium Challenge Corporation under the Ministry of Finance, is to serve as Minister of Finance and Development Planning. The president appointed Charles Gibson as Minister of Justice, and Sam Mannah as Press Secretary with immediate effect. The President has directed the heads of other government ministries and agencies remain in place until further notice. In his first speech as president Mr. Weah renewed his promise to tackle endemic corruption especially in the public service while vowing to prosecute corrupt government officials “to the full extent of the law’’.“As officials of government, it is time to put the interest of our people above our own selfish interests. It is time to be honest with our people“For those who do not refrain from enriching themselves at the expense of the people, the law will take its course,’’ he said.last_img read more

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ cast includes trans actors

first_imgSony Pictures(NEW YORK) — While comic fans buzzed about seeing Spidey alongside Marvel movie newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio in the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, the LGBTQ community had something else to cheer about. One of Peter Parker’s buddies in the movie is played by 22-year-old trans actor Zach Barack. This marks one of the first times a trans actor has been featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition, The Advocate reports trans actor Tyler Luke Cunningham is a featured extra in the same film.In Barack’s Instagram posts, you can see the actor alongside his good buddy Jacob Batalon, who plays Peter’s bestie Ned in the upcoming film from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.  Spider-Man follows popular CW show Supergirl, which cast 21-year-old trans performer Nicole Maines as the hero Dreamer. Maines knows her casting was significant for other trans actors.“If I had had a trans superhero, someone who looks like me wearing a cape, [while] growing up, that would have changed the game,” the actress recently told USA TODAY. “That would have been an entire new level of validation in myself, to think that I can be a superhero!”Venus Lux, a trans activist, entrepreneur, and adult film star, tells ABC Radio that the tide is finally turning.“I’m so proud and I’m so happy to be in this…time right now, that, you know, this can actually happen,” she says. “It’s not a dream. It is a reality.”She adds, “It just requires consistency of like pushing the envelope, and allowing more trans folks to be included and not just in a way where we’re portraying certain characters, but also having the stories behind us.”  Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News. Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. F— ’em!! We move forward the future is still bright #51-0 baby let’s go.”This comes on the heels of Eddie Hearn’s interview with iFL TV where Joshua’s promoter expressed frustration with Wilder’s promoter Shelly Finkel’s handling of the contract for the two men to fight and unify the heavyweight championship of the world.“However low your intellect may be, just understand one thing for me, if you want this fight, supposedly more than anything in the world and I send you a contract, why in the f— am I not getting anything back for six days?” Hearn said in an interview with iFL TV. “And then being told that in another six days you’ll get my comments? So 11 or 12 days to get comments on a contract that apparently we’re all so desperate to sign.“It’s absolute bull—.”For now it appears Wilder has given up on the fight, but with the way boxing is, it may be too soon to close the book on this one. This is the fight fans all over the world want to see and there is a lot of money to be made with it.While it may not happen immediately, or even soon, odds are it will happen eventually, but this certainly appears to be a substantial road block.
