Looking back at the Bollywood films of 2016, one thing that can be ascertained is that the number of films this year which depicted women in ways, unique and extraordinary, when compared to how Bollywood has traditionally dealt with women characters is very, very high. And what is more interesting is that these films, which mostly had women playing the main character and sometimes, a well-written supporting character, were commercially and/or critically successful.MOVIE REVIEW: DANGALALSO READ: 5 reasons Aamir’s Dangal has emerged a blockbuster despite demonetisationALSO WATCH: What works and what doesn’t in Aamir’s Dangal The year’s most recent release, Dangal, which hit the screens on December 23, has four female actors playing central roles in the film. The story is about Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari to become gold medal-winning world-class wrestling champions. Dangal, in spite of having a male actor, Aamir Khan in a central role, focuses heavily on the film’s female actors (Zaira Wasim/Fatima Sana Shaikh as the young and old Geeta Phogat and Suhani Bhatnagar/Sanya Malhotra as the young and old Babita Kumari) and their exploits as they go through emotional and physical upheavals on their way to becoming champion wrestlers.Dangal completely revolves around two women with no romantic interest to run after or fall back upon, who single-mindedly pursue their careers and don’t dance or sing songs to make the audience happy…and these roles are essayed by two rank newcomers Farima and Sanya. Unlike debutantes of yore, today, new female actors can afford to debut in a film with performance-oriented roles instead of prancing around in fields or getting wet in the rain.advertisementLooking back, some major female performances held together 2016’s best films. Take Dear Zindagi for example. Dear Zindagi’s protagonist was Kaira, a urban working woman whose priority in life is to work and make something of herself. The story focuses entirely on her character arc, its rise and fall and doesn’t make her the second foil to a male hero. In fact, Shah Rukh Khan only makes an extended cameo in Dear Zindagi and his character essentially exists only in service of the Alia-centric plot.2016 began with Neerja starring Sonam Kapoor as Neerja Bhanot, the flight purser who was shot and killed while making sure that hundreds of passenger of the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 were safe and sound.Neerja was quickly followed by Jai Gangaajal and Ki & Ka. In the first film, there was no male hero at all but Priyanka Chopra playing the ‘angry young woman’ cop role. In the second film Ki & Ka, Kareena Kapoor Khan subverts gender roles by playing the breadwinner in the house while her partner Arjun Kapoor is the stay-at-home man.Subsequent films in 2016 like Waiting and Nil Battey Sannata had women in central roles again with no hero in sight to carry the project. Even Te3n had Vidya Balan playing a police officer whose only job in the film is to solve the case at hand.Pink, Phobia, Parched and later in the year, Kahaani 2 were some of the other critically acclaimed films that made news because of their stellar stories, direction and acting and what was common between them? You guessed right…women in central characters. At one point, a film like The Dirty Picture or Queen was considered an anomaly in the film industry. They would selectively be singled out as ‘women-oriented films’. But today, so-called women-oriented films have become mainstream cinema. The credit goes entirely to the filmmakers and female actors who have made such cinema possible in India. With the resounding success of films like Pink, Dear Zindagi and now Dangal, one hopes that major filmmakers and actors continue to invest in and make such films.(The writer tweets as @devarsighosh.)

New Delhi: The pilot project envisaged for rolling out simplified monthly GST return forms from April 1 has been deferred and the new forms would be made available once they the notified and the software is ready. The GST Council had in July last year decided that the simplified GST return forms — Sahaj and Sugam — would be rolled out on a pilot basis from April 1, 2019, while mandatory filing across the country would kick in from July. In July last year, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) had come out with the draft GST returns forms and sought comments from stakeholders. Under the new return filing format, taxpayers who have no purchases, no output tax liability and no input tax credit in any quarter of the financial year would have to file one ‘Nil’ return for the entire quarter. Facility for filing quarterly return shall also be available by an SMS. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscalThe new return filing format would replace the current requirement of filing final sales return GSTR-1; but as per the plan, summary sales return GSTR-3B would continue for some time. “The pilot project of new return filing has been deferred. New date would be decided. The forms would be notified first; following which, the pilot would be launched. Systems are being developed for the new forms,” an official said. Small taxpayers, with turnover of up to Rs 5 crore in the last financial year, can file quarterly return with monthly payment of taxes on self-declaration basis. Also Read – Food grain output seen at 140.57 mt in current fiscal on monsoon boostThe return form ‘Sahaj’ is for businesses which make supplies to only consumers (B2C). It includes details of outward supplies and inward supplies attracting reverse charge as well as summary of inward supplies for claiming input tax credit (ITC). Also, such B2C businesses will have to show harmonised system nomenclature (HSN)-wise summary of supplies and interest and late fee liability details along with payment of tax and verification. HSN is a code number to specify a particular product. Besides, businesses making supplies to both businesses (B2B) and consumers (B2C) have to file returns form ‘Sugam’. It includes summary of supplies made and tax liability, summary of inward supplies for claiming ITC, along with details of interest due and tax payment. When goods and services tax (GST) was rolled out from July 1, 2017, a three-stage monthly return filing system was set up — GSTR-1 (sales return), GSTR-2 (purchase return) and GSTR-3 (final returns based on GSTR-1 and 2 matching). However, with businesses facing trouble, the GST Council decided in November 2017 to keep filing of GSTR-2 and 3 in abeyance. It also introduced a simpler GSTR-3B to facilitate easier return filing and tax payment.
Bankura/Purulia/Kharagpur: Accusing Narendra Modi of talking nonsense as he is suffering from fear of defeat, Trinamool Congress supremo said the death knell of BJP will be sounded on May 23, the day when the Lok Sabha election result is declared.Addressing a mammoth rally in Bankura on Thursday afternoon, she clearly indicated that BJP will not come back to power in Delhi and said: “Modi is talking nonsense as he is suffering from the fear of defeat and the death knell of BJP will be sounded on May 23.” Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari PujaAt Purulia, Banerjee challenged Modi to prove that his party leaders are involved with the coal mafia as alleged by him. “The Central Industrial Police Force (CISF) guards the coal mines which are under the Ministry of Coal and BJP leaders are its agents. Instead of blaming them, Modi is blaming us. If he can prove that any of my leaders are involved in the matter, I will withdraw the candidature of 42 candidates but if he fails to prove his allegation, he will have to tender apology and do 100 sit-ups holding his ears.” Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highwayIn Bankura, Banerjee alleged that to please Modi, seven-phase elections are being held in Bengal. “It is impossible to bear the heat but still polls are being conducted so that Modi can come and address election rallies. He is least bothered about the people who are suffering from unbearable heat and incredible stressful conditions.” Banerjee said that BJP had used power to hold Modi’s meeting in Bankura. “There are 50 owners of the land and out of them only 17 had allowed the party to hold the meeting. BJP used force to hold the rally at the venue,” she said. The Chief Minister further added: “Modi had influenced police to get clean chit in Godhra and Gujarat riot incidents.” She also alleged that BJP workers threw chairs and bottles at the police. “Modi babu, this is your culture and not ours. Such incidents do not happen in the meetings of Trinamool Congress leaders,” she said. Banerjee added: “He does not know about our culture and heritage. He says that I do not allow Durga Puja in Bengal. More than one lakh Durga Pujas are held and more than one crore Saraswati Pujas are organised throughout Bengal. He is so shameless that he does not do any homework before addressing the election meetings.” Banerjee urged people to vote for party nominees Subrata Mukherjee, former state minister for Panchayats and Rural Development in Bankura and Mriganka Mahato in Purulia. “Your one vote will help Trinamool to consolidate its position in Delhi and help to form a stable, secular and pro-development government.” Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday hailed his Banerjee as a “Bengal tigress” and said she had “taught a lesson” to the Prime Minister. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief attended her election rally in Kharagpur in support of her party’s Lok Sabha candidate Manas Bhunia.

Last week, a reporter jokingly asked coach Thad Matta about the impact that senior walk-on and blogger extraordinaire Mark Titus’ potentially season-ending labrum injury will have on the depth of the Buckeyes’ bench.“Well, you thought when Evan [Turner] went down things were bad,” Matta said light-heartedly. “We’re going to have to try and fight through this.”The reality of the situation regarding OSU’s bench appears a bit more serious. The team’s four starting guards, juniors Evan Turner, David Lighty and Jon Diebler, along with sophomore William Buford, average at least 32 minutes a game. Whether Matta will admit it or not, those numbers point toward potential fatigue by the end of the season.Seniors P.J. Hill and Jeremie Simmons each average more than 15 minutes a game, but those numbers are a bit inflated thanks to the playing time they received when Turner was sidelined with two broken vertebrae. In comparison, Michigan State has seven players that average at least 21 minutes a game and only one player, reigning Big Ten Player of the Year Kalin Lucas, averages over 30 minutes a game. Obviously, the Spartans possess more talent, as evidenced by their No. 5 ranking and 9-0 conference record. On the other hand, coach Tom Izzo has done a solid job balancing his players’ minutes in order to keep them fresh for the end of the season. The Buckeyes appear to lack that luxury. OSU is a guard-oriented offensive team. Their focus is using the playmaking abilities of Turner on offense, which usually results in him taking a shot or getting an open look for another one of the Buckeye guards. The big men have not played a prominent role. Junior forward Dallas Lauderdale’s offensive game revolves around tip-ins and dunks while senior forward Kyle Madsen relieves Lauderdale for short intervals and occasionally hits an open jump shot.Coming into this season, speculation abounded that two sophomores could help solve OSU’s interior woes. Seven-foot-tall center Zisis Sarikopoulos and 6-foot-9-inch forward Nikola Kecman were recruited as players with above-average offensive skills, yet both have been buried on the bench this season despite their impressive size. Before the season started, Sarikopoulos expressed confidence in his offensive abilities.“I think we are different in the way this team is set up. I know I can score on the block. I like to create action,” Sarikopoulos said. “So if I’m on the block and I’m not going to score, I can find the shooter. I can pass the ball very well.”Last week, Matta hinted that he was concerned about Sarikopoulos and Kecman coping with the physicality of Big Ten play. Nonetheless, for the second year in a row, Matta has been relying heavily on his starters. According to kenpom.com, OSU ranks 327 out of 347 NCAA Division I teams in bench minutes. In order for the Buckeyes to attain a high seed for the NCAA tournament, they will need to finish the regular season strong, unlike last season when they lost four of their last seven games before the Big Ten Tournament. That might be hard to achieve considering the major minutes OSU’s starters have been logging.
After leading FC Barcelona to the Copa del Rey semifinals with a turn around against Sevilla, Lionel Messi was fuming at critics who doubted them.During the Copa del Rey’s first Quarterfinal match between FC Barcelona and Sevilla, the media ran with a headline that suggested the Catalan club had thrown away the competition by not calling Lionel Messi to the match. The Argentine forward has been resting for games that manager Ernesto Valverde doesn’t consider risky as a new strategy he is trying to test, this is with the goal of having the best version we can possibly get of Messi for the final stages of the season in all competitions and possibly have a chance to win another treble. But the media saw this as a sign of weakness after both times in which the club lost its away matches against both Levante and Sevilla, Messi came back to save the club against the Valencian club but nothing guaranteed he would do the same against Sevilla at Camp Nou.The doubts on the Argentine player were quickly trashed by his amazing level of performance this Wednesday, he not only provided an assist and scored the most beautiful goal of the evening, but Leo also motivated his teammates to deliver the best performance they have given the public in months.🏆👑Leo #Messi : “We are Barça and we would never throw away the chance to win any of the big three competitions”🔵🔴 #CopaBarça #ForçaBarça pic.twitter.com/hHJeRCAMXh— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) January 30, 2019It was clear that the player loves responding to any kind of criticism on the pitch, he usually does it in the most spectacular fashion and just goes home to enjoy the spoils of his success. However, something has changed in the Argentina international as he is taking the captain role very seriously and wanted to talk to the press in order to remind everyone that FC Barcelona will keep fighting for all the titles this season. At the very start of the current competitions that the club is now playing, Messi spoke very honestly to all the fans to let them know that his most burning desire was to win another Champions League this year and he would do everything within him to achieve it.Leo wanted to state this Wednesday that perhaps the fans misunderstood his message because he wasn’t only talking about the European competition, Lionel believes that the Catalan club should always aim to win everything each season and he didn’t think that mentioning it was necessary back then. But now that things have gotten this mixed up, the man decided to come out and remind everyone of his intentions. To think this guy has gone on to rack up 5⃣0⃣ Copa del Rey goals for Barça… 🐐 Plus the ones to come… ⚽ pic.twitter.com/JWkDoF92jNTop 5 Barcelona players to watch in the Champions League Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 13, 2019 With the Champions League about to start, we need to start talking about the Top 5 Barcelona players to watch in the competition. The UEFA…— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) January 30, 2019“People keep saying that we threw away the Copa del Rey and we didn’t really want to win it,” said Messi via Diario Sport.“Maybe my message from the start of the season was misinterpreted. Let me be clear, this club wants to fight for all three competitions because it is Barcelona’s obligation every year. We are going to keep trying until the very end, we threw nothing away.”“The fans have delivered tonight. This looked like a Champions League match. We were fortunate enough to turn the result in our favor but it wasn’t easy because they did have a few important chances.”“Allowing another goal would’ve complicated everything for us, but we were lucky enough to go through. I did have a couple of chances that I missed.”“But we were lucky enough to get that goal by Luis that granted us that moment of calmness we needed. After that, my goal came when the match was already decided.”“The most important thing here is that the squad played a fantastic game and we made it to the next round.”“The penalty? Coutinho was coming from taking the last one against Levante. He wanted to take it and we came to an agreement because winning is all the mattered. He scored it and that makes me happy, because that’s where it all started,” he concluded. When you and the 🐐 are about to celebrate your 200th win in a Barça shirt 😍 pic.twitter.com/hVvwlLelX2— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) January 31, 2019Do you think Lionel Messi and Barcelona can deliver and compete for all the titles this season?
